“Creativity is contagious. Pass it on.” — Albert Einstein
Tapping into your creative side and accessing the right side of the brain is a powerful way to enhance your intellectual wellness. Getting creative can bring great joy and serve as a way to be more engaged with life. It boosts self-confidence and stimulates the brain. Think of spending time being creative as an investment in your mind and spirit.
Creativity requires focus, attention and imagination – all key ingredients to intellectual wellness.
Artistic endeavors also bring people together and strengthen social ties.
This is especially true given the opportunity to share the products of your creativity online with a broad and diverse audience and create communities and dialogue around your work. You can create a website showcasing your art and photography, sell your handmade goods on sites like Etsy, publish your writing on a blog, and share videos on YouTube.
There is a special opportunity to do that last one right now as part of the YouMD video competition hosted by the Health Center.
You are challenged to create a short video, promoting a health topic of your choice including:
- Sexual Health
- Alcohol/Drug Responsibility
- Stress Management
- General Wellness
- Eating disorders
- Tobacco use
Music videos, spoken word, skits, and other forms of creativity are all welcome. Post your video to this Facebook page and members of the Maryland community will be able to vote by “liking” their favorites.
Here’s one by Maryland student, Dan Singer that will get your creative juices flowing.
And as if the chance to go viral at UMD, there are prizes up for grabs too!
